College celebrates inaugural Graduation Ceremony at Randolph Correctional Center

Randolph Community College (RCC) proudly hosted its first-ever graduation ceremony at the Randolph Correctional Center on Thursday, Dec. 12, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between education and rehabilitation. This historic event celebrated the achievements of individuals dedicated to transforming their lives through education, offering hope for brighter futures.

Among the honorees, Matthew Ellington stood out as the recipient of the RCC Prosperity Scholarship, a prestigious award that recognizes academic dedication and potential. His achievement serves as an inspiring example of perseverance and the life-changing power of education.

“Our mission at Randolph Community College has always been to meet students where they are, and today, we proudly stand here, fulfilling that mission,” RCC President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan said. “RCC 2.0 represents our dedication to being a more Relevant, Career-focused, and Committed institution — one that renews its promise to serve every individual striving for a better life for themselves and their families. I would like to express my gratitude to our faculty and [Director of the Archdale Center] Tonya Monroe for pioneering this ceremony.

“These degrees and certificates are more than pieces of paper; they are symbols of access, opportunity, and transformation — core values of RCC. To achieve this, especially in the face of significant challenges, demonstrates remarkable character, resilience, and determination. To our graduates, know that we are deeply proud of you, just as you should be proud of yourselves. You inspire us all with your commitment to building a brighter future.”

Graduates received High School Equivalency diplomas and certificates in HRD – Career Exploration & Roadmapping, HRD – Thinking for a Change, and Plumbing.

“I wanted to hold the graduation at the prison to remind the inmates that they are a vital part of our mission at RCC,” Monroe said. “These classes are more than just education; they represent hope, transformation, and the belief that every person deserves a second chance.”

Ellington and fellow graduate Willie Harris delivered heartfelt messages of gratitude and hope, with Harris making his speech interactive by involving his fellow graduates.

RCC Board Chair Reynolds Lisk gave the Declaration of Graduation, noting the graduates “exemplify RCC’s motto of ‘Creating Opportunities. Changing Lives.’ ”

Darrell Frye, Chair of the Randolph County Commissioners, and Vice Chair Kenny Kidd were on hand for the historic event.

“This is among the most inspiring graduations I’ve witnessed in my 40 years of public service,” Frye said.

Dwayne Hull, Randolph Correctional Center Warden, congratulated the students and said he was grateful to RCC and its staff and faculty for the opportunity.
