Title IX & Sexual Discrimination

Title IX & Sexual Discrimination

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Legal Citation: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX)

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is indeed a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in any educational program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. It covers a wide range of issues, including, but not limited to, sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, pregnancy, and stalking.

Randolph Community College is committed to providing an educational and working environment that is free from discrimination and misconduct based on sex and gender, including discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Under Title IX, educational institutions are required to respond promptly and effectively to reports of sexual harassment and sexual violence.  Additionally, Title IX mandates that schools must have grievance procedures in place for addressing complaints of sex discrimination and sexual misconduct.

Title IX regulations provide pregnant and parenting students with protections similar to those offered to students with temporary medical conditions. These protections include accommodations to ensure pregnant and parenting students can continue their education without discrimination or barriers. Students who anticipate needing pregnancy or parenting accommodations can work with the Title IX Coordinator, Accessibility Services, and their medical provider to create a support plan tailored to their needs. Recommendations for accommodations from a medical perspective may include, but not limited to permission to have a snack/water, frequent bathroom breaks, temporary accessible parking, breaks to stand/walk and no lifting.

If you believe you have been or are being subjected to any of the above misconduct, please contact a Title IX Coordinator or a trusted faculty or staff member, who will notify the Title IX Coordinator. To help with the investigation, completion of the Confidential Title IX Discrimination Form is encouraged.

The Title IX Coordinator meets separately with the complainant (the individual who has allegedly experienced a Title IX policy violation) and the respondent (the individual accused of the alleged violation). During these meetings, the Title IX Coordinator explains the process, discusses available supportive measures, and provides information about resources and options for addressing the situation.
