rcc-truck-driver-training_first-class.jpgDo you want to earn a living while traveling?  If so, our Truck Driver Training program may be perfect for you! Whether you want to travel locally, regionally, or nationally, be self-employed, or work for an established company, truck drivers are always needed which means there are always opportunities for employment.

In our Truck Driver Training program, you will learn how to drive tractor-trailers and trucks and have the opportunity to earn a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL). The program will prepare you to understand safety, driver responsibility, and also the laws and regulations governing the motor carrier industry. You will get hands-on experience in a controlled driving environment so whenever you are finished, you will be ready to start your career. 

RCC's Truck Driver Training program is part of a partnership between RCC, Central Carolina Community College, and Sandhills Community College and is funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation.

Registration Information

This course prepares students for the Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) training. Instruction includes theory and practical hands-on behind-the-wheel operation of tractor trailers, preparing students to safely operate tractor trailer vehicles on the road to and from pickup and delivery points. Emphasis is placed on defensive driving, Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations, trip planning, cargo handling, vehicle systems, hours of service, vehicle inspection, and accident prevention. Successful course completers should be able to demonstrate the skills required to obtain a Class A commercial driver license by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and gain employment.

Students must pass DOT physical and drug screens, which are scheduled post-registration.

Truck Driver Training Course

  • Must be at least 18 years old with a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English as CDL tests are administered in English. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 49 Section 391.11 [b][2]) states, "Can read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records."
  • Must have a North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV) driving record by the course start date, but not more than 3 months. An uncertified complete history is acceptable, and may be obtained in person at 4121 New Bern Ave., Raleigh, NC, via mail, or online. Also, any of the following violations within 2 years of the course start date will prohibit registration:
    • Driving while impaired (DWI), 
    • Careless and reckless driving,
    • Hit and run,
    • Refusal to take the chemical test.
  • Students must pass DOT physical and drug screens, which are scheduled post-registration. Random drug tests may occur during the course.
  • To enroll in the Truck Driving Course you must FIRST obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit. RCC offers Commercial Learner’s Permit Classes for students to obtain their Commercial Learner’s Permit prior to the Class A Truck Driving Course. For upcoming dates see the "Schedule" above or call 336-633-0200.
  • After you have your CDL permit, you can enroll in the upcoming Truck Driver Training course. You must also pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen.
